Braiding Time: Sami Temporalities for Indigenous Justice

In Indigenous/settler relations, temporal rhetoric functions as an essential tool for both subjugation and resistance. Much scholarship on these temporalities focuses Turtle Island is thus implicitly shaped by a seminal historical event: the arrival of European colonizers. We extend this research turning to Sweden, where Indigenous Sami Scandinavians, who would later become their colonizers, have long history continuous interaction. analyze pamphlet written Elsa Laula, leader civil rights movement in early twentieth-century well Swedish policies press documents from time. While settler Swedes employ similar techniques othering erasure colonizers Island, Laula’s differs subtly. Her enacts resistance highlighting how are braided with temporalities, rhetorical move that echoes intertwined histories.
